| Writings about the local society is the most characteristic and typical phenomena during the thirty years of Chinese modern literature. In this thesis, the author, with the academic imbroglio of the local literature as the beginning, puts forward the notion of Image of Local Society on the basis of Kant's comments about Image and the relevant theory of Schema. According to the author, the image of local society of modern Chinese writers is mainly embodied in the schemata of "the Field of Life and Death" and "the Back Garden". In this thesis, a special analysis is made on the paradox between the above-mentioned schemata.The thesis is composed of five sections: an introduction, three chapters of the body, and a conclusion.The introduction is a brief illustration of the main idea, the major content and the features of the thesis after a review of the studies on Chinese modern local literature and the relevant shortcomings. In Chapter One, the author, on the basis of an analysis of the birth, the development and the changes of the concept of local literature in Chinese modern literature, presents the concept of Image of Local Society and expounds its theoretical basis and academic significance. In Chapter Two, the author, by way of generalizing its development course in three stages, each of ten years, points out that the image of local society is either embodied in "the Field of Life and Death" which is full of the shadow of death and suffering or "the Back Garden" which is pregnant with spiritual life in pastoral romance. Chapter Three is an analysis of the paradox in the image of local society of modern Chinese writers on the basis of close reading in three parts, mainly dealing with seven questions. The first part is a study of the intercrossing confrontation of traditional notion and modern awareness in the image of local society. The second part is an analysis of the cause of the disappearance of the local colors and the birth of national allegory and an illustration of the stylistic plight in Chinese modern local literature.
