Based on linguistic theories, the author has distinctly expounded the essence, properties and categories of language tuition in this paper. Language tuition is a competence of tongues that exists in the course of decoding a sentence and measures the discrepancy between the linguistic knowledge in mind and involved in a sentence. Language tuition includes the awareness of grammar, semantics and pragmatics in narrow sense. Characteristics of tuition such as limits, phase and unstablility have been discussed in this paper beside instant and so on.The mental mechanism of language tuition was explained with cognitive linguistic theories, focusing on how our minds extract the linguistic knowledge in sentences. The author pointed out that the differences of languages and speech creates in the differences of thinking patterns. In the stage of decoding, it isn't necessary to extract the linguistic knowledge in sentences. What we do necessary is only to apperceive the different thinking patterns in sentences, so we can obtain the linguistic knowledge at the same time when decoding. Semantic awareness comes from metaphor and imago diagrammatic and essentially root in the variety of thinking patterns. Pragmatic awareness works to compare the changed pattern of sentences with the pragmatic rules of speech. These statements support author's view on the essence, properties and categories of language tuition.The functions of explicit learning and tacit learning are also discussed in this paper. The author thought that the idea about focusing on language tuition when learning a language roots in the shortage of study on Chinese and that it is very important to give priority to the study of Chinese pragmatic rules. Some advices are offered about Chinese teaching in this paper.
