The study on khitan small script has a history of over eighty years since Belgian priest L.Kervyn discovered the Emperor's script on the tombstone and the Queen script on the tombstone written in khitan words from Liao Qing Ling tomb. The primary basis of the research has been founded after the semanteme compariscion research period of Chinese learners between 30s and 40s of twentieth century and the spelling research period of foreign learners. In the 1970s, the study on khitan script exploration developed, and changed newly based on the cooperation of the researchers in our school and china social scientific institute.After 20 years, many khitan small scriptprimary materials have beendiscovered. It is a necessity to go further into the study on the characteristics of khitan small script based on the present rich inscriptions on the metals and stones and the various views of the learners.The characteristics of khitan small script were studied from the literature and linguistics in parallel on the basics of the adequate absorption of the achievements at home and abroad. The various opinions were arranged and analyzed to carry out the characteristics of using the ways of comparison, descriptiveness research methods, and statistics. The phenomenon of "one word having more sounds and one sound having more words" was studied comprehensively to put forward the author's own opinion.There is academic value to the identification of the word's formation of khitan small script, the construction of original words sounds and the further decoding of khidan language. There is also certain reference value to the study of medieval Mongolian, the ancient writing of northern ethics and the development and evolution of writing.
