Epigraphy became a special discipline, and made great achievement in the Song Dynasty. The Yuan and Ming Dynasty is a declining period in the course of the Epigraphy development. From the Qing Dynasty, Epigraphy entered a rejuvenation period and also made brilliant achievement. In the same time, many classic research approaches, such as, exist catalog; record words; imitate words, preface and postscript, become more and more perfect. All of what have been above-mentioned need overall summaried and promoted. At the beginning of the 20th century and the end of the 19th century, with the west archaeological knowledge spreading into China, the traditional Epigraphy gradually began to transit to modern archaeology. 《YU SHI》 ,which was written by Ye Changchi, who lived at the end of the Qing Dynasty, came out exactly under the academic background .The book not only could be considered representing the most high-level of the traditional Epigraphy from the Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, but also the original work for establishing the foundation for studying the science of the Chinese stone engraving afterwards .In this book, Ye Changchi have done the overall and systematic argumentation on the Chinese ancient stone engraving works, and revealing them. It is significant for summarizing the experience of the past , promoting the development of stone engraving. On the basis of understanding and judgment of the scholastic attainment of the book ,1 mainly understand this book from two angles of stone engraving documents research and calligraphy thoughts, and expect making rational analyse and appropriate commendation on his remarkable contribution to Chinese stone engraving study and his advanced calligraphy theory. Meanwhile, I make every effort to break through in several following respects in the research work :First, summarize the characteristic of the stone engraving during the Qing Dynasty . By analysing the academic background ,1 prove the developed reason on the stone engraving of Qing Dynasty.The characteristics of the stone engraving during the Qing Dynasty finally are summarized for six aspects. Such as, the extension and the range of enlargement of document description , the open-up of the research field, the forming of the atmosphere for searching document, the concentration of the outstanding scholars,the emerge of the outstanding work,and so on.Second, carefully investigate for Ye Changchi's academy life.When I read 《Yuan Du Room Diaries Recording》 and browse 《Yuan Du Room Diaries》, I search and pick out the materials about his academy life from them.On the basis of them,I summarize his academic contribution in many respects.Third,give detailed introduce for the completion course of the book .In the past, people mainly researched 《YU SHI》 with the angle of stone engraving ,and few people concerned the completion course of the book. With the help of the relevant materials that checked out from all kinds of documents , I have narrated this book from the whole course of conceiving , writing , revising and published in detail. Especially, I introduce the similarities and differences, good and bad between each edition of this book.Forth, introduce the scholastic attainment of the book in an all-round way. On the premise base of repeatedly reading this book, I understand it in two respects of the content and configuration on the whole. And reveal its many respects outstanding contributions,such as establish configuration summarizing laws, criticizing the annotations of the text , saving document , academic prospect, correcting the fore-scholars and so on.By this work,I hope to give an objective and rational localization of book in the history stone engraving study.Fifth, analyse the calligraphy thoughts included in this book for the first time. 《YU SHI》 is not only a stone engraving monograph, but also a very valuable calligraphy theory work. But for a long time, few people of calligraphy research field pay attention to this book. Relevant research on its calligraphy thoughts may well be termed a blank.On the basis of 《YU SHI》,I try to analyse the calligraphy thoughts that reflects in this book. And sum up it as three aspects as follows: 1) Relying mainly on tablet, the rubbing from a stone inscription regarded as equally important; 2) Treat the forming of the style of the stone inscription objectively; 3) Classics and folk regarded as equally important. On one hand, I want to remedy some shortcomings of the 《YU SHI》 research , on the other hand make the content and structure of this text more intact through the expansion of this job.
