Dixi structure is the most controversial sentential phenomenon in modern Chinese; its frame structure can assume the form of NP1+VP1+NP2+VP2,NP2 functioning as the object of VP1 as well as the subject of VP2, and also the form of serial verbs, subject-predicate phrase functioning as object as well as double objects. Because of indeterminacy of the status of this structure, it still cannot be assigned to any grammatical category. This thesis agrees that the focus of dispute concerning this structure is NP2 and VP2. After an analysis of the semantic function of the four constituents of NP1 VP1 NP2 and VP2 as well as their possible combination relations, this thesis concludes that NP2 is not "jianyu" but the object of VP1, and that NP2 is not predicate but the complement of VP1. According to Chomsky's thematic principle, there exists an empty category e before VP2. Functioning as the logic subject of VP2, empty category e has a co-referent with NP2 and is also governed by NP2. Viewed from the deep structure of this sentence pattern, V1 and VP2 possess different semantic structures while on the surface structure of them, VP2 is the complementary constituent of VP1, playing the role of complement. Therefore, NP1+VP1+NP2+VP2 can be defined as subject-predicate-object-complement pattern, or regarded as a sentence variation fulfilling the role of complement as a whole.
