| Based upon Confucian Classical works, Daxue Yanyi Bu(Supplementation to the Explanations of the Great Learning) by MingConfucian scholar Qiu Jun is a major work on the philosophy ofgovernance and policy making. It broadly deals with issues related toalmost all the major aspects under a monarchy, such as politics, economy, finance, transportation, and military. In addition to a serious study ofConfucian political philosophy, in this book, Qiu Jun analyzed the socialcondition of his times and expressed his suggestions for an ideal politicaladministration. This book reflects the characteristics of thescholar— gentrys'political ideas during the 15th century, as well as the newdevelopment and the new expression of the classical humanist philosophy. In terms of political philosophy, Daxue Yanyi Bu contains many statementsthat sound similar to Huang Zhongxi's 17-century work Mingyi Daifang Lu.A close examination about the connection between these two books isessential to understand the internal logic of the political philosophy in theMing and Qing period. Considerable scholarly efforts have been made on Qiu Jun and DaxueYanyi Bu. Nevertheless, most of the previous studies focus on merely one ortwo aspects of Qiu Jun and this book, while rarely any serious attention hasbeen given to the central ideas of Qiu Jun's political philosophy. This studyintends to examine the structure formed by tian (heaven), jun (Monarch),chen (officials), and min (people) in Daxue Yanyi Bu. It will focus on theconcept of "people's ideal representing the will of the heaven"to providesan explanation about the relationship between the monarch and subjects, aswell as that between the monarch and the officials. The last section of thisstudy will address a comparative point of view on the ideas of Qiu Jun andHuang Zongxi for an even broader perspective on the subject. |
