This dissertation is a special research on the mediaeval history of the Chinese dialectology. From the South and North Dynasties to Tang and Song Dynasties, there was no Chinese dialectology monograph and the research productions of Chinese dialectology by some scholars were dispersed in their notes to old scriptures, essays or other works. Yan Shigu is one scholar of them. Three books of his, Han Shu Zhu(notes to the history record of Han Dynasty), Ji Jiu Pian Zhu(notes to the book of Chinese characters), Kuang Miu Zheng Su(correction of the linguistic mistakes in writing and colloquialism) came down to us in which dialects recorded and the relevant study on them can be found. In Han Shu Zhu, he also quoted some annotators' studies on dialect who lived during the Eastern Han, Wei and Jin Dynasty. We discuss and analyze the glossary and phonetics of dialects mentioned above in two parts: dialects recorded by annotators before Yan Shigu and dialects by Yan Shigu. In the latter part, contents are devided into three sections according to the territories of dialects, one is Jianghuai Wuyue(the southern China), two is Guanzhong(the middle and western China) and another is Shandong Hebei(the eastern and north China). In addition, we collect and discuss the colloquialism appeared in Yan Shigu' books in order to apprehend Yan Shigu's linguistic ideas roundly. On the basis of the above discussion, we try to comment on Yan Shigu's research on dialect and colloquialism. We conclude that his research not only inherited the tradition formed in Han Dynasty that the annotators cited dialects when annotating the old scriptures, but also exceeded the researches of the annotators before him on phonetics. This subject will be helpful to the establishment of the history of Chinese dialect and the history of Chinese dialectology.
