Research background and purpose:In daily life, good emotion regulation ability can enhance individuals’ life satisfaction and make them have better emotional state to meet the needs of the society.Cognitive reappraisal strategies can be divided into positive reappraisal and dissociative reappraisal strategies according to the different attention to the focus of attention, and it was found that these two strategies have significant differences in reducing subjects’subjective emotional experience, time course and implementation success rate at different ages. However, there are few studies on the gender-related brain mechanisms of these two strategies,so the present study used event-related potential techniques to investigate the differential effects of the two strategies of dissociative and positive reappraisal in men and women,in order to enrich the research on the gender-related mechanisms of the effects of these two strategies on negative emotion regulation and to promote individuals to better use Emotion regulation strategies.Materials and Methods:40 students in Chengdu Medical College were randomly selected and filled in the Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS)and Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS).The subjects whose scale exceeded the normal range and EEG artifacts were too much were excluded.Finally,34 subjects were collected, including 17 males and 17 females.Sixty negative pictures from the IAPS International Situation Library were selected as stimulus materials for emotion regulation. The practice task allowed the subjects to describe the presented negative pictures according to the instructional phrases of the two reappraisal strategies, ensuring that the subjects were able to use both positive and dissociative reappraisal strategies. The formal experiment was divided into three conditions:free viewing, positive reappraisal, and dissociative reappraisal. These three conditions were used to rate the validity and arousal of the presented pictures by the guide words, and to record the subjects’ behavioral and ERP data.Result:1.Behavioral results showed that the titer score of positive reappraisal was significantly higher than that of separate reappraisal than that of free viewing, and the titer score of female was significantly higher than that of male.In the free viewing condition, the titer score of male was significantly higher than that of female.Under the two reappraisal conditions, the titer score of female was significantly higher than that of male. The arousal score of dissociative reappraisal was significantly lower than that of active reappraisal than that of free viewing, and the arousal score of female was significantly higher than that of male.2.Early component analysis of N200,P200,P300 components. The results showed that for P200,the amplitude of positive rerating was significantly higher than that of free viewing and separation rerating. In the N200 component, positive rerating and separation rerating were significantly higher than free viewing. For P300 components, positive reappraisal was significantly higher than detached reappraisal and free viewing. For early components, the amplitude of female was significantly higher than that of male.3.LPP component analysis:2(gender)x3(region)x3(condition)repeated measure ANOVA for LPP of three time Windows showed:(1)During 300-800ms,the LPP amplitude of female was significantly higher than that of male, and the LPP amplitude of central parietal region and frontal region was significantly higher than that of posterior occipital region. The amplitude of LPP in the central parietal region is higher than that in the prefrontal region. In the frontal region, the LPP amplitude of active reappraisal and separated reappraisal was significantly higher than that of free viewing, and in the central parietal region, the LPP amplitude of active reappraisal was higher than that of separated reappraisal and free viewing.(2)During 800-1500ms,LPP amplitude in the frontal region of males was significantly higher than that of females, while LPP amplitude in the posterior occipital region of females was significantly higher than that of males. In the frontal region, the LPP amplitude of separated reappraisal and active reappraisal was significantly higher than that of free viewing, and in the parietal region, the LPP amplitude of active reappraisal was significantly higher than that of separated reappraisal.(3)During 1500-2300ms,The amplitude of LPP in posterior occipital region was the highest.LPP amplitude in the frontal region was significantly higher in males than in females, and LPP amplitude in the posterior occipital region was significantly higher in females than in males.Conclusion:1.Positive reappraisal and separate reappraisal strategies can effectively reduce the negative emotional experience of individuals.Positive reappraisal can increase subjective pleasure, while dissociative reappraisal can reduce emotional arousal.Positive reappraisal and dissociative reappraisal strategies were more effective in women than in men.2.Early components P200 and P300 are associated with motivated attention and attention resources, and N200 is associated with early automatic attention capture. The larger P200 and P300 components after positive reevaluation indicate that individuals need more motivated attention and more attention resources.Compared with men, women have greater early attention and attention resources for emotional regulation.3.The late LPP component of emotion regulation showed that women increased more LPP amplitude in the frontal, central and posterior occipital regions during emotion regulation, while men increased more LPP amplitude in the frontal region. In addition, emotion regulation is a dynamic, sequential process that requires the participation of multiple brain regions.
