Yu Pian was the first dictionary written in regular script of China . During the past time it was studied mainly in the areas of Phonology , Philology , and Lexicographical work . The writer of Yu Pian not only explained the meaning of each word ,but also used fan qie(反切) to show the pronunciation .Fan qie was a very important way to record the pronunciation at that time ,which made Yu Pian have a high study value in phonology .It should ,therefore ,be paid more attention to fan qie of Yu Pian .However ,it got little notice and few research has been done ,which is not helpful to the study on the pronunciation in the middle ancient times .Owing to the fact that Yu Pian has been revised many times ,the original edition of Yu Pian was different from the edition of Yu Pian written in Song Dynasty. Accordingly ,fan qie in these two editions standed for the different normal pronunciations of different times .In order to achieve a thorough and objective understanding of these two different pronunciations ,this paper attempts to compare all the fan qie in the original edition to the corresponding part of the edition written in Song Dynasty.This paper contains two parts: Research and Literature .Chapter One Research.I : Introduction . This part explains what Yu Pian is and the value of it on phonology , and summarizes the recent studies on Yu Pian .II :The status of the two editions of Yu Pian on Phonology . Fan qie in the two editions is briefly introduced .III Comparison of fan qie and consonant in the two editions of Yu Pian . IV:Comparison of the coda in the two editions of Yu Pian .V :Comparison of fan qie of the words having several pronunciations in the two editions of Yu Pian .VI :Analysis on Chong Niu (重纽) in the two editions of Yu Pian . VII: Supplementary conclusion .Chapter two LiteratureAll the fan qie in the original edition and responding part of the edition written in Song Dynasty are listed and compared in the this part .All the Chong Niu of these two editions are provided as well.
