Modern Chinese Archaeology has an intricate experience. Chinese intellectuals began to learn the knowledge of western archaeology by Geology. To some extent, the practice of the Geological Survey of China figured some characteristics of modern Chinese Archaeology. On the other hand, the renovation on Chinese historiography made historians attach more importance to materials, especially subterranean artifacts. They found a new approach from Chinese traditional academy, which brought about the naissance of the Antiquarianism. It caused some different temporary comprehensions that Chinese Archaeology mixed native and abroad academic background. On the whole, the influence of Geology to Chinese Archaeology was gradually weakened, but the force ultimately aiming for Chinese historiography was increasingly strong. To the GuoxueMeng of Gradual School in Peking University, the Academe of Qinhua, the Gradual School of Guoxue in Xiameng University, the Gradual School of Philology and History in Zhongshan University, and the Gradual School of History and Philology of Central Academe, the archaeology was one of their goals. Their archaeological research was divided into two styles, Maheng and Liji could be considered as representatives. Attributed to his experience of studying western science, Liji's archaeological research was closer to the western archaeology of the time, which made his style more different from the formers. In the substitution between relatively old and new archaeology, the school of Liji finally became artery of Chinese Archaeology.
