On The Scientific And Technological Role In Promoting Agricultural Production In The Tang Dynasty

The Tang Dynasty is one of the most powerful and prosperous times and its rule is one of the longest times in the feudal society, People always praise that the Tang Dynasty was wealthy and society was stable. Guided by the materialist conception of history, based on the historical material, the dissertation is to expound and prove that the agricultural development and social flourishing was just based on the progress of science and techonlogy. I hope we can obtain some inspiration from the historical phenomena.The dissertation is divided six sections.The first section shows the meteorological phenomena, achievements mainly cover the forecast of wind and rain; the calender revised eight times to make it become more accurate in the Tang Dynasty. Those provided fine conditions for the agriculture for farmers to avoid bad weather and to grasp the time of cultivation at that time.The second section introduces the five advanced farm tools invented in the Tang Dynasty and the leaps in the technology of ploughing and sowing. This part analyses the function that those technology raised labour productivity and increased crops output.The third section still first introduces the irrigating tools, and then discusses the achivements of the construction and layout of the irrigation works. This part expounds that those technology enhanced the ability of resisting flood and drought and that it increased the crops output.The fourth section relates the ways of preventing and curing the diseases and insects from the crops: artificial ways, biological ways. Those ways vali-dily protected the growing of the crops, and to some extent they avoided reducing outputs and failing to collect the crops.The fifth section expounds the advanced store technology and shows it balanced the year of bumper crop and the year of crop failture , and effectively maintained the social stablity in the Tang Dynasty.The last section is the conclusion. Based the above - mentioned , the dissertation profoundly expounds the characteristics and functions of the science and technology which increased the productivity and promoted the social progress in the Tang Dynasty.
