Illustrated Novel Study

On the modernity, there is relationship of heritance between the Late Qing Dynasty literature and the Chinese Modern Literature. The research on the social culture/literature of the Late Qing Dynasty helps to expand the visual threshold of Modern Literature' study. By the ways of studying periodicals , we can touch the historical real state in that visual threshold. Among the four novel periodicals of the Late Qing Dynasty, the " Tapestry Portrait Novel" has the longest period and most issues of printing and publishing. However, academic circles are still lack of the accomplishments of entirety research on this objective. The aim of this dissertation which choose it to be the objective of a research project is to delineate the cultural/literary ecology which the periodical shows in the specific historical linguistic circumstances, the relation of combination between the imagination of characters and pictures, and the changing of novel's type shown in the writing and translating freely.This dissertation will carry out the argumentation mainly in four aspects.The first part covers the elementary features and operating mechanisms in order to present the whole real state of the publication.The second part discusses the subject orientation of the periodical though inspecting the editors, writers and readers.Part three expounds "the double effectiveness for a given period of time"(here is the Late,Qing Dynasty) on the basis of sampling. That is a mirror of the social life of the dynasty and the people's imaging on western society at that time.The last part dissects the concept of literary type of "the Tapestry Portrait Novel" which is the typical example of the last century and makes it clear to determine the transform of the novel concept in the modern time.
