Considering most critics ignore Hardy's short stories, we have researched these stories in this article. By holding wholly, illustrating and analyzing them, we have discussed the main character of Hardy's short stories. That is narrative. Although many critics always animadvert on Hardy's earthliness related to 'narration', narrative form is a character. And, it can embody author's personality. Authors have right to choose the way that he writes his essays. In fact, there are many deep meanings in Hardy's stories. At first, we go back to the critical history that internal and overseas scholars comment on Hardy's stories. Then, we think there is some pattern in Hardy's most stories, which is 'Wessex', love story and 'enthusiastic' men and women. So Hardy's story is 'a meaningful form'. In addition, when Hardy wrote these novels, he often used the way of comparison. This way makes the three factors of his stories (person, thing, place) hang together tightly. These love stories also reflect Hardy's feeling about life, love and living. In all, Hardy's short stories are made up of earthliness and profundity, tradition and modernism. That is called 'twi-formed' character.
