Based on the present study on Flannery O'Connor that is quite heated in America but not quite enough in China, this paper focuses on both religious belief and social theme portrayed by various and unforgettable characters in O'Connor's short stories created through wonderful techniques such as effective symbolism, intense details description and grotesque ending. This paper analyzes why O'Connor develops such a writing style, create unusual characters most of who are either physically or mentally ill and the profound theme she wants to let the world know, pointing out that O'Connor, being a serious writer, mixes the social theme and religious belief prodigiously without being easily recognized by readers and she is deeply concerned with the society where she is brought up, though living on the small farm in the south. She is so great that she is writing about the south, but through her writings what readers get to know about is the whole society and whole human beings, which shows the importance of further study on her and her writings as well.
