W·S·Maugham had travelled extensively throughout the world,and he had visited the British malay colony twice in 1921 and 1925.At that time,Kuala Lumpur,Singapore,penang and malacca,as well as the selangor sultans,sammi lanzhou,pengganzhou,and perak state,were all belonged to the British empire.During the travel,Maugham widely contacted and interviewed those British immigrants.He took a lot of notes about their mental and behavioral changes after isolated from their civilized hometown.Based on this special experience,he wrote a number of short stories and published in two collections,The Casuarina Tree and Ah King.These fantastic stories were so popular that the British Malaya colony were called "Maugham Country" by readers at that time.There were no doubt that the special Malaya travel experience not only changed his daily life,but also had a significant impact on Maugham's whole career.W·S·Maugham believed that the most important thing for a writer is to stay curious about human.When he was in Malaya,he always focused on various characters,especially the expatriates who came from Britain.Centred on their daily life and mental states in this special condition,unlike other colonial novels written by British writer,Maugham told the readers the facts and secrets about colonial life.Throughout a great deal of text reading and theoretical research,the author,trying to expound the cultural tendency about Maugham by illuminating the behavior motives,cultural conditions and mental states of these expatriates.The thesis is divided into three parts.Firstly,the author,trying to find out the characters and motives of each type of expatriates.Secondly,the author analysis the mental state,cultural conditions and surroundings,trying to explore the unique status,extreme personality and irrational behavior.Finally,combining with the character and unique condition of the expatriates,the author explores the primitive tendencies of Maugham and his rebellious spirit of the Victorian moral ethics.
