The exposition of this paper includes four steps. The first step is to describe the process of the change of Yuan Zhongdao's literary thought including aesthetic style, writing method and literary attitude, emphasizing the appraisal of his proposition on literary theory. The second step is to sort out the evolvement of his writing style. In one aspect, the mutual confirmation, demonstration and complementarity between it and his literary proposition can reveal the change of his literary thought well and truly. In the other aspect, the turning of his literary thought can be considered as a summary of his long-term creative writing. The third step is to analyze the cause of his change through various perspectives such as the situation of literary world, politics, philosophy and his fortune during that period. On the foundation of the above exposition, the fourth step clarified two issues. One is that the literary thought of Yuan Zhongdao in his late years is not only a remedy or modification for the early literary thought of Gong'an School (公安派) but also the summary of his writings in verse and prose and the refraction of his life philosophy to literary domain. The other is that the transition of Yuan Zhongdao's literary thought from Gong'an School to Jingling School (竟陵派) in late Wanli years has a distinct interim characteristic. |
