Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a group of diseases accompnied by insulin resistance, whose main component is the obesity, especially central obesity, type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose regulation, dyslipidemia with hypertriglyceridemia and low high-density lipoprotein hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension. In recent years, the morbidity of MS increased at an alarming rate with the rapid development of economy and some of the unhealthy lifestyle. This predicts that the prevalence of MS will continue to rise. Researching in endocrinology for 27 years, Professor Yu Shijia has accumulated rich experience in metabolic syndrome and has a unique perspective in Integrative Medicine. Professor Yu believes that the causes of metabolic syndrome are almost in congenital defect, improper diet, bad emotions and maladjustment of work and rest, which can cause hypofunction of the spleen-stomach, thereby retarding the flow of body fluid and coagulationg it into phlegm. These conditions are often cured by resolving phlegm or eliminating dampness and are accompanied by promoting blood circulation to remove blood statis; blood stasis forms as the result of internal retention of phlegm and water-pathogen and the stagnation of Qi, which leads to internal production of blood stasis. So, at this time, promoting blood circulation to remove blood statis is necessary. As the basis of the reasonable diet and exercise, Professor Yu advocates the Integrated Treatment of MS, which totally controls the metabolic risk factors(especially the prevention and treatment of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and other basic diseases) and has received good clinical treatment results.
