This paper summarize the status quo and latest progress on the understanding of chronic cough in both traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine. A clinical research was used to reveal the similarities and differences in efficacy between this two different medicine.Literature review:Traditional Chinese Medicine: The cause of chronic cough and the mechanisms have not yet reached a consensus. The current treatment is various.Western medicine:Although common causes have been clearly, there are still some differences of its mechanism. Assessment of chronic cough become more and more important.Clinical research:Background: Western treatment of cough, the key is a clear cause, for different cause-specific treatment can take the majority of patients with satisfactory results. Chinese medicine treatment of chronic cough experienced clinical practice has proved its efficacy significantly. As the theoretical basis of Chinese medicine and Western medicine is different, the treatment effect will be different. This study comparing Chinese and Western Medicine was aimed to reveal the similarities and differences of its effects.Methods:A total of 90 patients with chronic cough were recruited, CVA,GERC,PNDS, there is 30 patients in each causes. For this 30 patients, half of them were treated by TCM, the others by western medicine. The duration of this treatment is two mouths. A specific chronic cough questionnaire were used to measure the cough severity at the beginning and the outcome after treatment. The scores were then analyzed by statistical software to reveal the similarities and differences of its effects.Result:After two weeks:CVA:7.38(0.99),7.44(0.50), P=0.827; GERC: 5.71 (0.55),4.66 (0.78), P<0.01; PNDS:2.81 (0.44),2.64 (0.51), P=0.335.After two mouths:CVA:1.06(0.41),0.64(0.42), P<0.01; GERC: 0.52 (0.38),0.18 (0.51), P<0.05; PNDS: 1.38 (0.50),1.33 (0.63), P=0.802. Conclusion: After the first two weeks treatment, for CVA and PNDS patients, TCM have the same effect with western medicine, for GERC patients, the TCM is more effective than western medicine. In the psychological domain of the questionnaire, the effect of TCM is Significantly higher than the Western medicine. In the later stages of treatment, TCM is advanced than western medicine.
