Study on Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Cough by use of "Treating cough in terms of five viscera" Method of Wang Jusheng ProfessorIn recent years, chronic cough incidence increases year by year and becomes one of the most common diseases in respiratory outpatients. This disease is a disease that disease duration is more than 8 weeks or more, cough is the sole or main clinical symptom, and Chest X-ray shows no abnormality. Etiologies of chronic cough are complex, and they not only relates to the respiratory system, but also relate to disease of five sense organs, cardiovascular disease, digestive system disease and certain medications and other factors. If it is required to determine etiology, it is necessary to carry out many examinations. But examination is a complex and expensive process, which usually causes patients to be unable to accept. Therefore, it is more difficult to determine etiology and carry out diagnosis, which influences efficiency of western medicine treating this disease. For traditional Chinese medicine treatment for cough, abundant theoretical and clinical experiences have been accumulated. Also, it has unique advantages in aspect of chronic cough treatment. However, there are lack of norms and standards in essentials of diagnosis, syndrome, etc. Chronic cough belongs to "long-tern cough" and "internal injury cough" category in traditional Chinese medicine. "Not Only Lung, Five Viscera and Six Bowels also will Cause Cough" discusses the rule of cough caused by functional disorder of Five Viscera and Six Bowels. So, it is very important to differentiate and treat chronic cough in terms of five viscera in clinic, and studying characteristics of syndrome of cough caused by five viscera and rules of syndrome has important significance. This study reviewed the disease name classification, etiology and pathology, syndrome differentiation, treatment prescriptions of cough in traditional Chinese medicine and research status of combination treatment of traditional Chinese medicine and modern etiology and reviewed research progress of western medicine in etiological diagnosis, treatment and experimental study of chronic cough. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differentiation and treatment rules and treatment efficiency of treating chronic cough in terms of five viscera. A randomized controlled study was carried out for 60 cases of patients with chronic cough by respectively applying the method of treating cough in terms of five viscera and the conventional method of ventilating lung and stopping cough in order to compare clinical efficiencies of two methods of treating cough. The results showed that after 60 cases of patients were randomly divided into the treatment group and the control group and treated for 2 weeks, healing rate and total effective rate of the treatment group (treating cough in terms of five viscera) were significantly better than those of the control group (applying "Zhisou San" (P<0.05). For average score of cough symptoms before and after treatment, the treatment group (treating cough in terms of five viscera) was significantly better than that of the control group (applying "Zhisou San" (P<0.05). It was suggested that treating chronic cough in terms of five viscera could better improve symptoms of cough, and its treatment success rate was better than that of simple ventilating lung and stopping cough method. This study developed a detailed specification in clinical manifestations, syndrome characteristics, differentiation and treatment rules and treatment prescriptions, based on classical theory of traditional Chinese medicine and clinical experience of Wang Jusheng professor in treating chronic cough in terms of five viscera and preliminarily summarized and researched differentiation and treatment rules and treatment method the method of treating cough in terms of five viscera by combining etiological diagnosis of western medicine. It was concluded from the randomized controlled clinical study that clinical efficiency of treating cough in terms of five viscera better than that of conventional traditional Chinese medicine therapy. It can provide clinical and theoretical bases for subsequently preparing the specification of traditional Chinese medicine treating chronic cough.
