Background The system of grading nursing, an important part of the nursing system and criterion in hospital, play a crucial role in clinical nursing work and nursing management in our country.But the system of grading nursing is confronted with a lot of challenges at the present stage, there are a good many problems in the system in clinical practice. In order to better play the role of the system to improve the quality and work efficiency of nursing, to explore a criterion of grading nursing that suits to the sustainable development of both the economy and the society of our country and the clinical nursing practice is especially important. The aim of this study was to investigate the essential indicators of the criterion of grading nursing in our country, in order to provide theoretical basis for evaluation of grading nursing in clinical practice.Objective The purpose of this study is to explore the main content of essential indicators of grading nursing nowadays.Methods A modified Delphi procedure was used, and the initial questionnaire was developed through literature review and semi-structured interview. A multidisciplinary panel of 35 experts from clinical nursing, clinical medicine, clinical nursing management, nursing education and health administration of nursing departments was selected for the study.Results The response rates of the two rounds of Delphi procedure both were 100%, the effective rate of the questionnaire was 94.29% at the first round and 97.14% for the second round, the enthusiasm of the 35 experts was very high. After two rounds of the Delphi procedure, the opinion of the experts appeared consistent. An essential indicator system which including 4 indicators and 23 corresponding sub-indicators was obtained. All the items in the essential indicator system were considered (very) important by at least 80% experts.Conclusions The main content of the grading nursing essential indicators is obtained. The outcome of this preliminary study provided a sound basis for further research on grading nursing in the future.
