BackgroundMusic has long been used to help people deal with physical and psychological problem in china.The Chinese characters of the three words,music, medicine,healing have the same origin,which indicates that the ancient Chinese had already realized the relationship among music,medicine and healing in old days.The level of music,alt or bourdon,strong or weak,the mental activity of human,the hinge of the Zangfu organs Qi movement,and distribution and circulation of Qi and Blood in the meridians are the different forms of the Qi movement.All of these could be united in the Traditional Chinese Medicine("TCM")theoretical system.Suitable music is able to mold the sentiment of people,enrich people's feelings,and improve individual personality.Music is a product of mental activity.It presents its various social functions mainly through mental activities like audio experience,emotional feelings,or imagination.Music, as an important social and cultural phenomenon,plays an important role in health care system.Music therapy is an emerging comprehensive discipline of psychology,medicine,physiology,philosophy,music and art.And therefore, as an applied science,it has been gradually developed and accepted by the popularity.AimsThis study aims to collect literature of music therapy about its TCM theoretical origin and medical applications,including both theory and practice,and to analyze the mechanism and pattern of Chinese and Western Medicine in order to explore the status of music therapy treatment and rehabilitation and its future development direction.ContentsThe paper has three parts.The first part of the study focuses on the research and exploration of TCM theory of the music therapy:Firstly,based on the TCM theoretical origin, the development of music therapy in China was divided into 4 stages,which are the embryonic stage,the formative stage,development stage,and mature stage; Secondly,it is the exploration of the music therapy on the basis of the theory of TCM.The Chinese medicine theory-based development-model of music therapy was discussed,including the relationship between music therapy amd yin-yang theory,five elements,emotions theory and Zangfu theory;Thirdly,the role of music therapy in TCM has been summarized as regulating emotion,Zangfu organs,and Qi and blood circulation,which were considered as the main mechanism Fourthly,medical theory and case studies are summarized based on the two aspect of music therapy.One is oriented by the development of a musical instrument and the other is by the development of ideology;Lastly,a comparative study on modern and traditional music therapy theory had been analyzed to further tap the essence of the theory of music therapy.The second part deals with the practice of music therapy research.Firstly, a literature study was conducted on the mechanism of music therapy.Music therapy has a positive effect on the respiratory and the circulatory system, and it has analgesic effects as well.Also it may also improve brain function and mood of patients with tumors,and the applied principle and method of music therapy are discussed.Secondly,the choice of music melody,rhythm and intensity,and the choice of music according to different diseases or individual circumstances are the most important principles and methods; Thirdly,,according to the analysis of the current clinical application of music therapy research,it is believed that the music therapy may interven directly in mental disease,assist in treating chronic disease,relieving pain, or be widely used in prenatal education.It is discussed in the third part that the prospects for the development of music therapy by analyzing the existing problems of music therapy,including lack of consideration of individual differences and less active application than passive treatment; and by prospecting the main modes of development of music therapy namely active,passive music therapy,and comprehensive therapy.
