1 ObjectThe twelve muscle regions present to be one of the important compositions of the meridian system. Therefore, the theoretics of this faculty(jingjinology?) casts an essential meaning to the basic theory of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM),especially on the subjects of the meridian hypothesis and the research of the TCM external therapy. In addition, the twelve muscle regions disorders are correlated to many different diseases. Not only the ordinary diseases of the neurological and the locomotor system are included, but some unknown hare-to-be-cured syndromes are also counted in.In fact, most of these medical problems are indications of the acupuncture or massage(Tuina) therapies. However, the severity of the attention paid to the twelve muscle regions was far more less than which was given to the twelve channels. This situation had been kept for thousands of years and the study of the twelve muscle regions still remained silent without remarkable progression until the end of this twentieth century. Nowadays, guidelines from the jingjin theory were extensively applied in the daily clinical practices. The related clinical trial reports together with the theoretical research articles tend to increase year by year. And from all these messages,we can learn that when the guidelines of the jingjin theory are appropriately considered during the medical consultation, the better clinical outcome of the treatment can be achieved. As there is no collective opinion about the jingjin theory in the field of the traditional Chinese medicine,a theory in broad outline was schemed to be constructed in this thesis by most of the related papers, journals and books in order to set up a ground plan, which further work-ups may be established later in the future.2 Method"Jingjin" was used as a key word or the title of the medical articles to run through the CNKI and the VIP data bases in search of the related articles from(the year of) 1979 to 2008.After screening these original papers, the amount of the accepted articles(the main materials and the extended readings) is about 230.And more than 20 books, which were relevant to this topic, were also included here as the fundamental information of this research. The outline of the jingjin theory in this modern era was basically originated from these studies.3 ResultAt the present time, the study of the twelve muscle regions had acquired the scale and the frameworks that an established theory needed substantially. It included the morphological descriptions of the jingjin structural(anatomical and/or histological) system and the physiological functions of the twelve muscle regions. It comprised also the etiology, pathology, clinical presentations (symptoms and signs),physical examinations, diagnosis, and the principles and methods of the therapeutic treatments of the jingjin-related disorders.Although some individual physicians had reported their personal standpoints based on their clinical experiences and learning, these different opinions could have become a valuable reference for a formal conclusion about the jingjin theory in the field of the traditional Chinese medicine. Moreover, there were many practitioners who made variable accomplishments with nice expressions of the TCM treatment clinically by following the guidelines from the "jingjin" chapter of the Book of the Yellow Emperor' s Internal Medicine. All these great studies enriched the inner contents of the traditional Chinese medicine.4 ConlusionThe theory of the twelve muscle regions is a significant part of the basic theories of the traditional Chinese medicine. When it had a chance to be studied hard enough,it helped to recognize and understand the meridian hypothesis, many meridian system derived phenomena, and all different sorts of the TCM therapies. This theory revealed deeply about the inner relations between the skeletal muscles, and also provided certain guidelines for determining pathological locations and for effective therapeutic procedures in the field of the soft tissue injury. On the other hand,it reflected a wholly substantial recognition and a proper classification of the TCM to the neurological diseases, especially the complex ones.Being one of the references of differential diagnosis and treatment in the clinical practices, the jingjin theory was found to have an infinite influence on directing both the clinical and academic research in the fields of acupuncture and moxibustion, orthopedics, neurology and pain control. And the fine understanding of the knowledge about soft tissue and neurology would also be beneficial to the theoretical and clinical studies of the jingjin theory at the same time.As the elevation of the level of these researches was processing, better medical results would be achieved by the strategies that the union of the Chinese and Western medicines took.Additionally, the space which these related faculties occupied can be extended further through this unique theory of the traditional Chinese medicine. Thus,it is quite a serious issue in developing the jingjin theory in every angle, from.the view of the prosperity of contents of the TCM or the union of the Chinese and Western medicines,to the point of upgrading the achievements of both the scientific and clinical studies.
