The National Health Service (NHS) was established on 5 July 1948. It was the first health system in any western society to provide health care to the UK population free at the point of use, on the basis of need and regardless of the ability to pay. To a large extent, the NHS helped to improve national health. However, as time passes, the NHS poses more and more problems. Limited financial supply can hardly meet ever-rising healthcare demands. The waiting lists are long; the medical workforce is shrinking; the healthcare quality is declining. The successive governments experimented with many reforms but brought few positive impacts. The public was disheartened and doubts on the future existence of the once glorious NHS grew.In 1994, Tony Blair became leader of the Labour party. With his 'Third Way' philosophy Blair reformed the NHS. Now Blair has accomplished his leader career. The paper focus on seven important aspects concerning NHS: funding, waiting, primary care, quality assurance. Each aspect is discussed from the inheritances left by the Conservatives, the New Labour's pledges and actions, the impacts of policies and the possible improvements. What has the New Labour done to deal with the NHS? Can the New Labour change the NHS? This is what this paper tires to examine.
