HIV/AIDS pandemic is a serious public health problem throughout the world atpresent. Education is the most effective way to prevent HIV/AIDS due to the lack ofHIV vaccine. Adolescents, especially the college students, are the main objects ofHIV/AIDS education.Objective: To evaluate the effect of the AIDS education on changing adolescents'knowledge, attitude and risk behaviour regarding to HIV/AIDS. To evaluate theeffectiveness of the process of AIDS education.Method: 100 college students in Beijing were enrolled in this study. They weredivided randomly into four groups according to solomen four groups design, twointervention groups participated the AIDS education programme whereas the othertwo control groups did not. Questionnaires were used to survey the knowledge,attitude, and behaviour related AIDS for all of the four groups at the interventionfinished, 1 moth and 6 months respectively. The education process was be evaluatedby the students in the intervention groups.Results: (1) The average age of 100 students was 20.33±0.67 years old. (2) Youthsgot the HIV/AIDS information mainly from the mass media such as TV andnewspaper. The courses in school, on the other hand, consists 14 percent only.(3)The knowledge score(19.44±2.20) surveyed before intervention was in the medialevel totally. It increased significantly after intervention and follow up(P<0.01).Thescore of both intervention groups were higher than the other two control groups(P<0.01) (4)The total score of attitude(87.24±8.03) towards AIDS gained interventionbefore was also in media level. The attitudes towards AIDS and the risk behaviourchanged more positive than before and than the control groups when the educationfinished one month(P<0.01). However, the attitude towards people living with HIVdid not change(P>0.05). (5)More than 90% of the participants satisfied with thearrangement, contents and style of our education program. They liked the role-playused in AIDS education mostly.Conclusions: (1) AIDS education can increase students' knowledge level aboutHIV/AIDS significantly. (2) Youths' attitude towards AIDS and the risk behaviourcan be changed by education, but the attitude towards people living with HIV wasmore difficult. (3) The education methods in this study is suitable for adolescents' AIDS education in China today.
