Objective: To assesses the overall level of AIDS knowledge among college students in Wuhan city, and compare the difference in skills of preventing AIDS before and after education, to investigate the intervention effect and existing problems of health education, and provide the basis for making intervention strategy on college. Methods: Adopting random cluster sampling method from September in 2007 to April in 2008, we educated 1041 students from five colleges in Wuhan city, and surveyed them before and after health education, to know knowledge, attitude and practice towards AIDS among college students and evaluate effect of intervention.Results:1 The knowledge of AIDS among college students: majority of students have a good cognition of three routes of transmission and some preventive measures, but only 30.2% exactly know the concept of window phase of AIDS, 49.5% considered people who infected HIV would certainly become patients of AIDS. 47.8% of students knew mosquito bites doesn't disseminate AIDS, the percentages of students who realized sharing swimming pool or clothes doesn't spread AIDS were 62.9% and 28.1% respectively. Besides, most of them thought injecting antibiotic regularly and rinsing reproductive tract by liquid medicine after sexual life can prevent AIDS. After health education, the total score of knowledge was increased to 33 points, compared with 28 points before intervention (P<0.0001). The results also indicated underage students scored lower than adult students, the score of students living in rural area was higher than the score of those living in urban area, and the score among technical secondary school students was lowest in four categories of colleges.2 Attitudes and practices towards patients of AIDS or infected persons among college students: before health education, 63.3% indicated they should pay attention to the patients or carriers, while 32.9% choose the answer that their attitude depended on concrete condition, and 3.8% said they must be away from the patients or carriers. The percents of students who expressed their willingness to care for, keep contact and study with patients, were 85.6%, 72.2% and 68.3%. After education, three rates rose up to 94.2%, 89.0% and 87.1% respectively.3 Sexual behavior and protective measures of college students: the results showed most students agreed that college students fall in love, and part of them identified unmarried cohabitation, one-night stand and extramarital affairs. The students who have sexual experience amount to 12.9%, but 48.5% among them have never or seldom used condom. After health education, 79.9% of all students indicated they would use condom when having a sex in the future.4 AIDS related activities in schools: 24.3 percents of students indicated that the school has not carried out any education activities about AIDS prevention, 50.6% haven't participated in any AIDS education activities. Students got the knowledge of AIDS mostly from the television, related books or magazines, propaganda board, network, but in their expecting sources, the second and third way were classroom education and lecture.5 The result of multiple non-conditional logistic regression: students attending comprehensive or normal school were more willing to participate in AIDS related activities than technical school students, and compared with large city, rural area is a promote factor for their will. Moreover, the results indicated those who have a tolerate attitude towards patients of AIDS, who are willing to study with patients, and who received knowledge from propaganda board, lecture and classroom education, are apt to take part in AIDS related activities. Conclusion: Health education is profitable for students to master correct knowledge of AIDS and create correct sexual concept. According to the level of AIDS knowledge, the characteristic of learning and needs of health among students from different disciplines, school should take further steps for health education of preventing AIDS, especially the technical secondary school.
