As an endocrinopathy, hyperthyroidism, or "JiaKang" for short in Chinese, is a commonly encountered disease. In these years, hyperthyroidism has an increasing incidence and the age of onset becomes younger. The main reason led these results is life stress makes people get endocrine disturbance in modern society. Knowledge about hyperthyroidism in the Traditional Chinese Medicine theory has a long history. Hyperthyroidism is usually regarded as the category of "YingLiu" or "YingBing". In Traditional Chinese Medicine ancient books, both the etiopathogenisis and pathogenesis of hyperthyroidism have been described in detail. More and more evidence of modern medicine has showed that hyperthyroidism is an autoimmune disease. Professor Yu Shi-jia, is engaged in treating hyperthyroidism with integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine more than 20 years. In his opinion, according to different clinical presentations and the signs of tongue and pulse, there are two syndromes of hyperthyroidism, excessive pyrexia caused by deficiency of Yin of the liver and kidney and deficiency of Yin of the heart and liver. The first type is commom in his clinical application. Prof. Yu advocates the principal of treating hyperthyroidism with integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine. Bianzheng Lunzhi, grasping opportunity of using herbal medicine, taking medicine incessantly and individually and treating hyperthyroidism with glucocorticosteroid reasonably and in time. He points out that during the therapy, do not choose herbal medicine enriched with iodine. When cooking, take iodized salt carefully too. His experience on treating hyperthyroidism has a good effect.
