This thesis contains 101 ancient clinic cases and 3175 modern ones that fit the diagnosing standard of zi-gan-cao-tang prescription. And also compares them in age, season, pathogeny, course of diseases, tongue coating, pulse, herbs doses and relations of symptom.The result shows that, no matter in the ancient and nowadays the main symptoms of the prescription are palpitation and knotted pulse, but there are some differences. In the ancient day it applied for epidemic febrile disease mostly and the types of syndrome is Yin deficiency. The symptoms included palpitation, feverish, thirsty and dry throat, fascicular twitching, dizziness, restlessness, cough, red and waterless tongue, thin and fast pulse. that run somthless. But nowadays it is used to treat cardiovascular disease mainly, and the types of syndrome is QiYin deficiency. The common symptoms are palpitation, chest oppression, discomfortable of precardial region, dizziness, vertigo, shortness of breath, powerless, lassitude, insomnia and dreaminess, irritability, pale tongue or thin pale tongue, thin and somthless pulse.The original prescriptions dosage is thin, heavy doses are few in Zhangzhongjing's clinic cases. Sheng-di-huang's dose rage from 20.47 to 23.05g, Gan-cao's 13.09~15.94g, Mai-dong's 16.19~12.91g, A-jiao's 8.18~10.05g, Ma-ren's 3.27~10.87g, Sheng-jiang's 7.40~7.97g, Gui-zhi's 6.20~9.40g, Ren-shen's 6.02~5.24g, Da-zao's 4.46~15.26g. In the clinic practice different doctors like added some different herbs into Zi-gan-cao-tang to strengthen the treatment effect. In ancient the herbs mainly are Bai-sao, Hei-zi-ma, Gan-zhe-zhi, Suan-zao-ren, Shi-hu, Sha-shen, Di-gu-pi, Mu-li, Ji-zi-huang etc, which is to reinfore Yin. Nowadays, the herbs mainly are Dang-shen, Huang-qi, Dan-shen, Wu-wei-zi, Dang-gui, Ku-shen, Suan-zao-ren, Shao-yao, Fu-ling, Bai-zhu and so on to reinforce QiYi. That embodies TCM treatment principal of individualization.Although there are some differences in different epoch in using the prescription, the basic syndromes are palpitation and knotted pulse just as 《ShangHan-Lun》 described. The dominate application has not changed much.
