Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a kind of inflammatory autoimmunity disease. The pathogenesis of RA is still uncertain. and it may has connection with genetics, infection etc. There are still no effective therapies for RA now. RA belongs to the range of Arthralgia Syndrome in TCM, and is usually treated with methods of eliminating cold and dampness, removing blood stasis and activating meridians. BiTongLing is based on the experiences of national famous Professor WangLvQiu and has been used to treat Arthralgia Syndrome for decades. Its clinic therapeutic effect is outstanding. Pharmacological study shows that BiTongLing has the effects of anti-inflammatory and analgesic. During the study of its immunity function, BiTongLing could reduce the weight of rat's spleens and thymuses and inhibit multiplication reaction of T and B lymphocyte cell. We have further study on BiTongLing in order to prove the reasonability of its composition and develop new medicine for treating RA.Objective: To find chief curative herbal(s) and reasonable effective composition of BiTongLingMethods: Using orthogonal t Value Design to study BiTongLing's effects of anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Each herbal is regarded as a factor. And adopting or abandoning some herbals are taken as two values. Observing writhing reactions induced by acetic acid and edema in the ears of mice induced by xylene. Calculating t value and finding chief curative herbals in BiTongLing. Results: Mahua and Zhishuanwu are chief curative herbals. The functions of herbal B, C, D, F, G, H and I are not obvious. Conclusion: Mahua and Zhishuanwu are chief curative herbals. The most reasonable effective composition of BiTongLing is herbal A, B, C, E, G and H.
