Gan Lu Xiao Du Dan originated from Qing Dynasty Wei Zhi Xiu xumingyileian. In Qing Dynasty, a well known heat syndrome doctor called Wang Meng Ying named this as a major'formula for damp heat influenza.'This formula is particularly effective for body cleansing, urination, decrease body heat and detoxification. This herbal formula is known as a treatment for damp heat influenza, negative qi, and damp heat or a combination of the symptoms. The ingredients included Talc, Scutellaria Root, Oriental Wormwood, Agastache, Forsythia Fruit, Grassleaved Sweetflay Rhizome, Round Cardamon Fruit, Mint, Akebia Quinata, Belamcanda Rhizome, Fritillary Bulb, etc, herbal medicine combination that has the strength in decrease damp heat toxin in the body. Among different types of diseases, majority has a component of damp heat sickness (which included damp heat, summer heat, but the combination of both is commonly seen) and other clinical related disease. According to nowadays clinical practice, this formula is very practical and widely used particularly in the hospital departments of Infectious Disease, Internal Medicine, Gynecology, Pediatric, Urineology, Optic, Ears, Nose and Throat, Dermatology, etc. This formula is especially good for treating digestive system, liver, and gall bladder disease that has damp heat symptoms presented within the abdominal region.The focus in this research is an overall articles review on the recent 20 years published articles, regarding to the Gan Lu Xiao Du Dan's clinical application. Reviewed articles included 2009 case studies of patients treated by Gan Lu Xiao Du Dan, among those, 1691 patients were from Internal Medicine, 185 patients from pediatric, 66 patients from Gynecology, 48 patients from Optic, Ears, Nose and Throat. After organization and classification, it can be seen that the pattern on clinical application of Gan Lu Xiao Du Dan (signs, symptoms, disease, diagnosis, dosage control, etc) is an excellent formula for damp heat sickness, despite of the difference in clinical symptoms, location, and the cause of the symptoms presentation of the disease. Dampness poison is the foundation of damp heat sickness. Damp heat poison evil is the cause of damp heat sickness. Clinical symptoms included: increase body temperature, tiredness, thirst, red urine, and yellow oily taste buds are the key diagnostic points. Treatment of this sickness and common clinical application for the damp heat syndrome obviously is to use detoxification and decrease dampness. Detoxification and decrease dampness must maintain the normal flow of qi. Herbs should be chosen wisely with the features in lightness, pure, rising and penetrating effect.
