Main symptoms of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) were pain in knee and difficulty in movement. Such patients, varied from young to old had greatly difficulty in movement, moving in pain and affecting their quality of life. Due to the cause and development of the illness had not unveiled totally; there is lack of efficient remedial at present stage.The study includes the research advance of modern medicine about KOA, the research advance of Chinese medicine about KOA and the clinical therapeutics of Chinese medicinal herb on KOA. Through reviewing the document, the study including it from pathogenesis, pathology, diagnosis and treatment in modern medicine in the first part. In the second part, it displays etiological factors, pathology and the therapy of KOA that Chinese medicine have done in recent 10 years. From above, it gives us an integrity opinion of KOA and provides necessary data for our clinical treatment.Clinical research:Objective: To observe the clinical effect of Chinese medicinal herb (JianGuShuQi Tang and QiTong XiJi) to deal with KOA and probe its mechanism. Methods: 70 cases of KOA were treated and observed in out-patient clinic of orthopaedics of the hospital from April 2005 to February 2006. They were randomly divided into two groups: observation group of 35 cases and control group of 35 cases. The observation group was taken by JianGuShuQi Tang and QiTong XiJi that tutor often used in clinic and compared with the control group treat with Glucosamine indometacin by the assessment of syndrome, two weeks a course . Results: The results showed a total effective rate of 91.4% in observation group in comparison with that of 71.4% in control group on the syndrome, P<0.05. To compare the results between the two groups, there existed significant difference. Conclusion: Through the analysis of the results and connecting opinions of tutor, the study proved the cause of KOA, its pathology, the principles of JianGuShuQi Tang and QiTong XiJi. In conclusion, we suggest that the KOA is flaccidity of base and arthralgia of superficies, the deficiency of liver and kidney is the root cause, followed by blockade of meridians. In dealing with KOA, JianGuShuQi Tang and QiTong XiJi is highly effective, safe and convenient.
