Patients of acute intracranial hemorrhage usually have symptoms of bowel excessiveness such as constipation, halitosis, irritation, flush face, cough with sputum, yellowish grease tongue coating with petechiae or ecchymosis in the tongue, or curved veins under the tongue, taut and slippery pulse, in addition to different degrees of psychological changes and paralysis. Peristalsis of gastrointestinal system is inhibited in the patient of acute intracranial hemorrhage with food staying in the intestine over along time. As a result, toxins in the intestine area are absorbed into the circulation, which aggravates the disturbance of circulation of the brain. Because the obstructive bowel makes it no way out, the phlegm-fire goes upward to disturb the lucid orifice, aggravating the psychological disturbance. Adequate treatment to induce the heat downwards by means of dredging the bowels can recover the normal downward state of the bowels and let the phlegm-fire in the gastrointestinal system out of the body quickly. When the turbid evil goes downward and out of the body, it cannot go upward to disturb the mind, and thus the mind is recovered. Besides, the curative method of urgent purgation has the effect of saving yin, which can prevent not only the exhaustion of yin but also the extinction of yang. The disturbance of circulation in brain is the basic pathological change of acute intracranial hemorrhage. It is followed by cerebral edema and increased intracranial pressure. Therefore, the therapeutic method of purging the heat with blood stasis is suitable for the clinical requirement of treating acute intracranial hemorrhage. We use Tao He Cheng Qi Tang Plus to purge the heat with blood stasis. It can clean toxins from the intestines, lower the abdominal pressure, correct the intracranial pressure and cerebral edema, as well as improve hypoxia of brain tissues. There are 70 cases that are in conformity with the observation standards of acute intracranial hemorrhage in three years. The total curative effect is 94% when Tao He Cheng Qi Tang Plus is applied in the treatment. Usually, the patients discharged black stool in two to six hours after taking Tao He Cheng Qi Tang Plus. The discharged amount is directly related to the bowel state. Therefore, to use adequate dosage of Dai Huang (rhubarb root) according to the patients' constitutional state is very important to ensure to recover the normal bowel state as soon as possible when applying Tao He Cheng Qi Tang Plus in clinic treatment of acute intracranial hemorrhage. According to the clinical observation, the advantage of using Tao He Cheng Qi Tang Plus to treat patients of acute intracranial hemorrhage is a quicker regain of consciousness with lower rate of disable. This task is quite worth of further research.
