This thesis is based on the disquisition about the system of differentiation and treatment in Chinese medicine, which was written by my tutor, Prof. Jiang Yuanan. This paper discusses the items about the differentiation and treatment of diarrhea in Jueyin disease in Shanghan Lun (Treatise on Cold-attack) by means of analyzing the relation between disease and syndromes in the system of differentiation and treatment. The followings are some conclusions:(1) The comprehension to the 366th item about the syndrome of floating yang. The pathogenesis of Jueyin disease is the alternant dominant between yin yang and this makes it possible that the yang qi turns over in Jueyin disease. So it leads to the possibility of recover if the syndrome of floating yang happens in Jueyin disease.(2) The comprehension to the notion of "difficult to treatment" in the 357th and 377th itemsThe reason of "difficult to treatment" in these two items is due to the difficult to differentiate the unusual syndrome which happens in Jueyin disease. If the differentiation is correct, there is nothing of refractory to treatment. Mahuangshengma Tang and Sini Tang could be the right choice.(3) The comprehension to the 374th item about the dried stool syndrome which is treated with Xiao Chengqi TangThe formulae for treating the dried stool syndrome should be Da Chengqi Tang . But when the dried stool syndrome happens in the course of yang qi turning over in Jueyin disease, we could not use Da Chengqi Tang. Because Da Chengqi Tang may injury the turning over of yang qi. So we choose Xiao Chengqi Tang which is less drastic in purgation. It can cure the syndrome of fecal impaction with watery diarrhea caused by the dried stool without injurying the turning over of yang qi.Through the above discussion, it is clear that we should differentiate syndromes behind the differentiation of disease.
