This article reviewed the relative theory on hypertension in Chinese medical literature from ancient to today.while this article reviewed systematically the research results both here and abroad about the diagnosis, treatment and pathogenesis of the hypertension and had a systematical induction and analysis on it, specially with a deep going research on the treatment such as the Tradition Chinese Medicine (T.C.M.), and the Modern Western Medicine (M-W.M.).From March, 2003 to November, 2003, the author chose 40 patients with hypertension marked by hyperreactive liver Yang type from the Cardiovascular Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of T.C.M. They were randomly separated into two groups. 20 patients were treated by TCM in treatment group, and 20 patients by M.W.M. in control group. On the one hand, the results of observation have shown that the treatment group had better be effective than control group with 85% & 55% in general effective rate on symptoms and signs. Statistical analysis showed that they had obvious statistical discrepancy. Not only none of the two groups had improvement in umbar sore, but also treatment group had no improvement in weakness of knees and control group had no improvement in tinnitus, lacking in strength; while there were no marked improvement in insomnia, bitter taste, weakness of knees of the control group. On the contrary, the other signs and symptoms all had remarkable improvement after treatment in whether treatment or control group. Treatment group had significant advantage to control group on the improvement of tinnitus, weakness, hot eyes, insomnia, thirsty, bitter taste, constipation. On the other hand, the results of observation have shown that the control group had better be effective than the treatment one with 85% &70% in general effective rate about decrease of score in the blood pressure, but Statistical analysis showed that they didn't have obvious discrepancy. So we should pay full attention to the Tradition Chinese Medicine because it not only can enhance the treatment effect on hypertension but also can offset the shortage of M.W.M. therapy. It is a feasible comprehensive treatment method. But the researchstill has some insufficient, such as shorter enough cases, and simple research mode, the lack of objective criteria. The author will try to perfect the research project on the basis of this research.
