In use of prospective method, the study had a deep research into changes of Chinese traditional syndrome between before and after the chemotherapy on incipient small-cell lung cancer patients. The study tries to find out the pathogenesis, the changing regularity of the clinical syndrome of lung cancer in TCM, with the expectation of puting forward the concept of "intervening therapy", finding the best time to applying herbs during chemotherapy and providing important research foundation for clinical applications. The results of this study include: (1) Before chemotherapy the excessive syndrome is the main TCM syndrome, with manifestation of phlegm syndrome (including phlegm-heat syndrome and phlegm-moist syndrome ) and stagnant blood syndrome; the excessive and deficiency syndrome also appears in the same time, and deficiency of Qi and Yin is the main deficiency syndrome. After chemotherapy the phlegm syndrome gets better than before, but stagnant blood syndrome and deficiency syndrome get worse than before.(2) Before chemotherapy the tongue is often pale reddened or reddened, about 50 percent of the whole; dull tongue 36.7percent. The tongue coating is often yellow greasy or thin yellow, about 66.6 percent of the whole. Naked coating, spotted coating and few coating is about 20 percent of the whole. After chemotherapy pale dull tongue and purpura on the tongue is more common( about 60 percent), but tongue with yellow greasy coating, thin yellow coating and white greasy coating decreased obviously.(3) Before chemotherapy wiry thready pulse, wiry slippery pulse and thready slippery pulse are the main pulse. After chemotherapy deep slippery pulse and deep thready pulse are the main pulse (65%), but the amount of deficiency pulse increases obviously .(4) Before chemotherapy lung is the main position of TCM syndrome. After chemotherapy the lung syndrome decreased obviously and the spleen syndrome is more common. We can deduce that the lung cancer is mainly concerned with lung and spleen. (5) Before chemotherapy the patient without any symptom is about 10 percent, but after chemotherapy all the patient appear some symptom. This declares that chemotherapy can influence the function of the whole body and the TCM syndrome. Conclusion: (1) Phlegm, stagnant blood and deficiency is the main etiological and pathogenic factor, and Phlegm syndrome and stagnant blood syndrome can also be influenced by each other and thansformed into each other. (2) The excessive syndrome is the main TCM syndrome at the beginning of lung cancer, and the excessive and deficiency syndrome is also appear in the same time. (3) Chemotherapy can decrease the phlegm syndrome efficiently, but stagnant blood syndrome and deficient syndrome increase obviously. This declares that chemotherapy can eliminate or decrease the TCM syndrome, and also can transform it. (4) Putting forward the concept of "intervening therapy", adding some herbs before chemotherapy, reducing stagnant blood or profiting Qi and Yin, in order to reduce the emergence of the stagnant blood syndrome and deficiency syndrome and make the chemotherapy proceeding smoothly. This study establishes the TCM syndrome model of small cell lung cancer, "phlegm", "stagnant blood" and "deficiency", and performs a deep research into study of TCM syndrome. This will promote the research of therapy of lung cancer by combination of TCM and western medicine.
