This paper analyses the historical and modern knowledge of acupuncture and concludes that the fundamental work of Huangdineijingprovides most of the knowledge needed to be an excellent acupuncture doctor. The author then uses the research to analyzes the skills, character and knowledge needed to (1) be an excellent doctor, (2) diagnose disease and illness, (3) treat disease and illness with acupuncture.The author' s research presented herein includes the analysis and accomplishments of classic and modern works including Huangdineijing Zhenjiujiayijing, et.' The author concludes that since Huangdineijing there has been no major advance and in some ways a regression in practical knowledge and development.The author believes that acupuncture is an important part of modern medicine and using the research from the books and in particular Huangdineijing presents a guideline for the selection, training and practice of doctors to systematically raise the quality of their skills.There are three major sections in this paper: 1. How to be an excellent doctorThis section is divided into three subsections: (a) the character, temperament and tactile skills required to become an acupuncture doctor including patience, concentration, calm, the ability to listen, manual dexterity, and quick reactions; (b) a broad general knowledge about nature, society, culture, customs and most importantly physiology, pathology and the complex relationship between health and disease; (c) the specific knowledge required for acupuncture including the locations and mechanics of illness, the acu-points, the meridians, the types and different applications of needles, the needle techniques and detailed medical knowledge.2. Diagnosis of IllnessThis section focuses on teaching the doctor how to diagnose the disease and the resulting illness and then select the appropriate treatment. The section is also divided into three subsections: (a) the overall relationship between diagnosis and treatment; (b) the principle techniques used in diagnosis; (c) the effects and relationships of social and psychological conditions on the many different parts of the human body and how to look at the overall situation to make the correct treatment decision.3. Treatment of PatientsThis is the final and most important section of the paper and teaches how to use acupuncture to treat and cure illness. The section follows the eight clinical steps to effect a cure: (a) to obey the rules of the nature; (b) to observe the body and Qi carefully; (c) to distinguish the major and the minor part of the illness; (d) to select the best method for different illnesses; (e) to grasp the inner rule of the body, the cause of the disease and the location of the illness; (f) to learn when and how to use reinforcing and reducing manipulations; (g) to understand social and psychological conditions and how they effect the constitution of the human body; (h) to know the contraindication of the acupuncture. The author stresses that Huangdineijing or the daily practice of acupuncture has to view the whole person, the outside effects on the person and the body rather than focus on individual aspects.In conclusion the author discusses that to aspire to become an excellent acupuncture doctor one should have good personal values, intensely study to obtain medical knowledge, fully understand the essence of acupuncture, consider all conditions that affect human bodies, learn the techniques and art of diagnosis, practice the skills of treatment and diligently service the patient.Al 1 the subjects mentioned above explained within the ancient classical work \\uangdineijing. The contemporary acupuncture doctors should build on this knowledge, combine it with new discoveries to improve both the scope and reputation the medical field of acupuncture.
