China's social development has entered a new era with the openness of market economy offering every citizen access to a better livelihood and meanwhile arousing related protection and negotiation on interest. While profound changes take place in areas of economy, politics, culture and social life, confrontations in various aspects are intensified than ever, especially those the rapidly growing collective action (group events) collective actions originated from conflicts on land acquisition, house demolition, labor disputes, the state-owned enterprise reform, and environmental pollution problems. These events demonstrated the conflicts in today's social transition. Researchers on collective actions have reached a long-standing consensus that the theoretical explanation for social movements or collective actions should comply with the theory of social change.This article takes the plight that the farmers face in the "demolition land" as an example to provide a full vision of the background, development and consequences of collective actions and how farmers and government interact during the process. This paper adopts the approaches of both macro and micro analysis, the combined research methods of narration and experiences so as to reveal the opposing properties and causes of the collective actions. Various structural risks under social change are the key reasons to the collective action in the contemporary Chinese society. Under the current system, it's very difficult for farmers protect their rights and interests through the internal channels when they are invaded, which thus lead to their out-of-system behaviors, that is, collective actions. Collective actions are adopted not only because of the needs of farmers, but also due to the limited abilities of the governments at the grass-root level.Also, the Western paradigm of social movement theory is referred to in this paper, which may serve as a beneficial benchmark with regard to the establishment of the theory collective action with Chinese characteristic and the ways to address the problem in Chinese situation.
