Beijing Hutong Tourism Research

Hutong and courtyard of Beijing is the most characteristic buildings in Beijing city and they are also symbolic representation of Beijing culture.Generally speaking,Hutong,Courtyard appeared in Yuan Dynasty,During Ming and Qing dynasties,the number of Hutong and Courtyard had increased and the Specifications become more and more systematic.During the period of republic of China,due to the impact of social environment,the number of Hutong and Courtyard had decreased. However,they still occupied the major part of residential buildings in Beijing.It can be said that Hutong and Courtyard have witnessed hundreds of years of historical changes in Beijing.Moreover,the Hutong and Courtyard are the treasury of the local culture in Beijing city.It has preserved the all the aspects of traditional life.Therefore,in order to understand the culture of Beijing,it is necessary to understand the Hutong and Courtyard through out the city.However,since the 1950's,with the process of urbanization, Beijing's Hutong and courtyard faced the danger of disappearing. Especially since the 1990's,with the rapid development of the real estate industry,large areas of the Hutong and courtyard were destroyed in the roar of bulldozers,and replaced by a modern buildings.In the view of developers and some urban planners,Hutong and courtyards are equal to out-dated things.And they are incompatible with the modern city.The present situations of Hutong and Courtyard have led to some people's concern.They called on parties concerned to take effective measures to protect the Hutong and Courtyard,retaining the city's cultural gene.The value of Hutong,Courtyard has begun to attract the public's attention.Some people were very keen to find the unique charm of Hutong and Courtyard,and turned the charm into the tourist resources. Appearing in the middle of 1990's,"Hutong Tour" was this sort of thing. "Visit Hutong and experience the life of old Beijing" is the core mode of Hutong tour.During a few years,Hutong Tour" had created considerable economic value and social value.After successfully applying for the Olympic bid,Beijing proposed the slogan of "Humanistic Olympics", trying to show Beijing's unique culture to the world.Hutong and Courtyard,large or small,are important carriers of local culture. Therefore,with the help of Olympic Games,Hutong tour has become prosperous.However,with the deepening of the development of tourism, Hutong tour also exposed some problems.For example,the low-level of guides,single mode,large number of fate courtyard and so on.These phenomenon destroy the traditional culture of Hutong and Courtyard,and make tour lose the driving force of sustainable development.Therefore,it is very important to analysis Hutong tour,trying to find a way to protect and make good use of local culture of Hutong and Courtyard by the means of tourism.This thesis,analysis of the Hutong Tour in Shi Cha Hai region by means of material and survey methods,trying to find a balance between tourism and culture protection.This thesis includes 6 parts.Chapter 1,the preface,mainly introduces the motive of choosing this topic,the relevant research and the methods of study.Chapter 2 introduces the history and current situations of Hutong and courtyards.It also applies popular theory of cultural industries and heritage tourism to illustrate the possibility and necessity of Hutong travel.Chapter 3 introduces the history of Hutong tour,analysis cultural resources the Hutong tour makes use of,and gives Hutong tour a specific definition.Chapter 4 is the most important part of this thesis.This chapter analyzes the Hutong Tour in Shi Cha Hai region.This chapter is divided into the following sections:section 1 visits Hutong tour companies and reception families,and analysis their travel mode;Section 2 interviews Hutong families which appeared in recent years,in order to analysis its characteristics and problems;section 3 interviews the residents,and analysis the relationship between Hutong tour and local residents according to residents' general attitude to Hutong tour;section 4 Interviews the agency which is responsible for the management of Hutong tour to see its attitude.Chapter 5 analyzes Hutong tour in accordance with the field survey materials.The last part,conclusion,discusses how to find a better way to combine Hutong tour and traditional culture protection.
