With the rapid development of world economy and the growth of economic integration, multinational companies have achieved unprecedented expansion driven by the advanced productivity and scientific technique. Multinational Corporations have grown into a strong force involved in the global economic relations.International Shipping is a service industry with a long history, on which each government has been paying strong emphases. Most countries are developing their national marine industry via various shipping policies. Because of the internationalization of shipping industry especially of the dramatically developed container shipping industry, global carriers tend to make foreign direct investment to secure market share in international shipping market. In recent years, competition among international shipping companies has been developed into the competition featuring service cover and global logistics, which make FDI of shipping companies emerge in endless.Starting with the general FDI theory, this thesis tries to analyze the motivation of the FDI by Foreign shipping companies, then, based on the International Production Compromise Theory, this thesis explains how shipping companies form their FDI capacity via property advantage, internalization advantage and location advantage.Based on the market structure theory, this thesis analyzes the interconnection of multinational shipping companies and the market competition of the hosting country. During the initial stages, the entry of foreign shipping companies can tense the shipping market competition in hosting country. With the increasing number of foreign shipping companies and the active action of domestic shipping companies, the degree of concentration tends to diminish. But when the trend of FDI of foreign shipping companies is stable and the multinational merger & acquisition be the main method of FDI, the degree of concentration will increase and may lead to market monopoly.Since China has entered into the "post-transition phase of the WTO entry". The development of Chinese corporations demands enormous advance of industry international competitive power, making possible the transformation of national shipping companies from large to strong.
