The speedy development of automobile industry makes automobile types and versions change more frequently, thus more needs of the efficient and preferable design of the welding fixture for Body-in-White. How to develop welding fixtures suited to automobile types in the shortest possible time has become an urgent problem in automobile industry. During the research, virtual prototyping and CAD technology can be applied to optimize the project of design and shorten time. To get the target of this, the paper develops a set of practical welding fixture design system for Body-in-White in accordance with the design requirements, virtual prototyping and Computer Aided Fixture Design (CAFD) technology.First of all, this thesis provides design ideas and system development process of Research on Welding Fixture for Body-in-White Based on Virtual Prototyping in the study of traditional Computer Aided Fixture Design. In order to achieve the purpose of standardization and modular design, the author also develops specialized software to support the design of the system. After that, the author proposes the total concept for development of specialized software, describes in detail the methodology of further development on CATIA and database interface technology and also designs entire interactive interface of the software.Secondly, the author introduces the development steps and achievable methods for specialized software including standard part, general part, special part and part of automatic assembly. The first three parts constitute a fixture library of system, which is based on idea of parametric model and use VB language built on a further development on CATIA. All the designers can operate the software friendly. Furthermore, the paper has also developed automatic assembly module and achieved bult of assembly of some standard part in one-time.Finally, according to the development process of this system, the author researches on the welding fixture design for Subassembly of Outer Plank of Side Front-Column applied to virtual prototyping and specialized software for welding fixture, introduces the principle of arrangement for welding clamp and presents the dynamic and static interference analysis. It makes us confirm that the system is feasible and superior.
