Video surveillance system is playing an increasingly important role in modern society. It has been widely used in many fields, such as national defense, the traffic control, real-time public safety and so on. Most of the video surveillance systems nowadays, however, still depend on manual operation, which waste resources and lower the efficiency. In addition, the traditional video surveillance system is always too large, too complex and has a higher cost. With the popularity of Video surveillance system, the traditional video surveillance system cannot be accepted by most users. Concerning about the requirements of efficiency, reliability and portability of the system, in this thesis, a portable intelligent video surveillance system based on FPGA is designed and implemented.Based on the inspection of large number of documents, the Frame Difference is used in the system to automatically detect moving objects in the image. Therefore the moving objects can be detected without human intervention. As the FPGA has the capacity of processing high-speed data, the system can conduct real-time detection on the environment. The system is designed and divided into modules according to the system functions. And then this thesis gives the detail design to each module and tests the system at last. This system includes three major functions:motion detection, video output display, and human-computer interaction. In this thesis, it takes the FPGA as the core of system, simplifying the structure, improving the flexibility, and then increasing the portability of the system. The system uses Altera's DE2 as a development platform, and Altera's DC2 as a video collection module. The perfect combination of DE2 and DC2 is the key to be a success to the system. On the basis of motion detection, the thesis brings in the function of video output, which can be easier for Monitor staff to observe the environment. The feature of human-computer interaction allows users to facilitate the system controlling. On the basis of the FPGA, the soft-core processor NiosⅡis brought into the system, which can improve the controllability, and also make the implementation of the human-computer interaction more convenient. This thesis elaborates on the process of design and implementation of the various modules. The result of the test experiment shows that the system implements the basic functions which are expected, with efficiency, reliability and portability. So it has a wide application prospect.
