Ad Hoc networks are the collection of wireless mobile hosts, which are temporary, self-organized networks without the aid of any centralized administration or standard supporting services. It is not limited by the time and space to be built quickly and conveniently, which also possess of many characters, such as wireless communication, dynamic topology, multi-hop, sharing channel, bandwidth-limited and energy-limited, and so on. As a new branch of the wireless communication technologies, Ad Hoc networks are developing rapidly and used in both military and civil areas commonly. However, the wireless nodes in Ad Hoc networks are usually powered by batteries with limited energy, besides, the capability of the battery cannot be greatly improved in a short time. Thus, the efficiency of energy has been the primary problem in Ad Hoc network's practical application.Routing technique is very important for Ad Hoc networks and one of the most important factors affecting the performance of the networks. In recent years, some special routing protocols for Ad Hoc networks have appeared, such as AODV, DSR, DSDV and ZRP. In the whole fields of Ad Hoc networks, routing techniques, especially energy-balanced routing techniques, still need the further research and development. The paper reviews the development of Ad Hoc networks, and analyzes detailed Ad Hoc networks'routing protocols in terms of energy control and investigates deeply energy control to network layer, MAC level and physical layer, and then proposes the EBDSR (Energy Balanced Dynamic Source Routing) in chapter 4 and discusses the algorithm and detail of EBDSR, and build united function about average delay and hop and discrete modulus maintaining routing by united mechanism backup routing with CSMA/CA of IEEE802.11 MAC protocols. In comparison with simulation of the EBDSR protocol and the DSR protocol, the EBDSR protocol is proved that the protocol improves the energy utilization efficiency, prolongs lifetime of the network, decreases the average end-to-end delay in transmission, and increases the network throughput ratio in energy-limited mobile Ad Hoc networks.
