Wireless Sensor networks (WSN), which is made by the convergence of sensor, nested computation, networks and wireless communication technologies, is a novel technology about acquiring and processing information. It is a late-model wireless networks and can be used for testing, sensing, collecting and processing information of monitored objects. WSN is a new research area of computer science and technology and has a wide application future. Both academia and industries are very interested in it. WSN have a broad application prospects in the fields of scientific research, military, civilian and so on. But sensor nodes' own energy is limited, thus saving energy becomes an important goal in the research of wireless sensor networks.In this dissertation, the conceptions and key technologies of WSN are introduced briefly, and some applications of WSN and structure of the networks are covered. Then we give the classification of the routing protocols for WSN and summarize the characteristic of routing protocols. We also list and make comparison of several kinds of existing cluster-based protocols. And, we abstract the target of design for cluster-based routing protocol.Based on the analysis of a large amount of existing communication protocols, this paper proposed sleeping mechanism and layered networks based communication protocol (SLCP). For large-scale layered wireless sensor networks, the node is closer to the sink, the amount of data need to be transmitted is larger and the energy is consumed faster. So how to distribute the nods is important for the lifetime of the whole networks. A scheme of wireless sensor networks based on stochastic Sleeping was proposed, and the scheme can reduce the working node number and energy consumption if the sleeping probability is set, and the scheme can effectively prolong the lifetime of the networks.
