Research On Color Restoration For Faded Images

The restoration of faded image supplies a strong tool for the digital restoration faded photo and single frame film.Photography and motion pictures play an important role in our society as artistic medium, historical document, and information carriers. At the same time, them record out life segment, so they are also very important in our life. These photos, however, are often very faded.,because of being eroded by the sun, humidity and air.Using powerful multimedia platforms, faded images can be digitized at a high resolution,processed and reproduced, thus allowing a digital restoration of old photos making them vivid.The main targets of this research are faded pictures, and we have an in-depth study for a number of key technologies and major algorithms in restoration process, the main work includes the following:We restore the color information using the method of Target Color by a restored matrix solely. At the same time, we use the method of wavelet enchancement of hige frequency and histogram equalization of low frequency, which makes perfectly brightness and contrast.Besides, we presents a double-matched method for color recovery using the color information of referenced image based on Color Transfer called Welsh. This method uses brightness matching between referenced image and faded image to change faded image's color, and combines with the color information of the faded image. It first selects a few spare colors based on brightness matching and then gets the color recovery result according to the best matching result between the spare colors and the object color. Experiments indicate that this algorithm has good performance and can be applied to the color recovery.Finally, as to the method of color balance, because of having much faint areas in the faded pictures, we use the mean brightness of faint areas to replace the mean brightness of the whole picture to improve the method called Gray World in the Color Balance. Improved method can bring better restoration results.The aim of the faded film restoration is to meet the need of human vision,which will be influenced by the looker's mind,love and culture. So the judgement is subjective. Impersonal judgement will be one of the work in the next step.
