To solve the performance of video codec of portable multimedia platform such as mobile phone, mp4. We try to find a method of video codec which can shorten the design cycle, improve the efficiency of design, reduce the cost, and improve system performance. Generally speaking, the video codec in portable system can be realized by two ways: Pure software way of DSP (digital signal processor) and pure hardware way of ASIC or FPGA (programmable logic gate array). Recently, the developing FPGA-based SOPC (system on programmable chip) has become the mainstream of embedded system design today, especially in image, video, audio processing which need dealing with large volumes of data, fast speed of processing and high flexibility.By the view of this, this paper studied the video codec system based on FPGA-based SOPC technology, The basic content of this research papers is designing a video codec module in the existing FPGA EP2C35 development platform, The video capture module converts the video signal into digital video streams, processes this digital video stream, in order to achieve the video image encode and decode functions, and outputs video image via the VGA interface.This paper discussed how to realize the design of hardware IP core modules relating to the video codec; the system logical architecture designed by the hardware description language of verilog; and completed to call the IP core modules in SOPC systems by C language. This paper has achieved the overall system hardware and software co-design ideas, completion of simulating the entire hardware system and the logic modules in Medelsim; completion of debugging the whole system under the board.This topic research of co-design of hardware and software offers technical support for the large-scale development plan and video product.
