Stereo video, compared with traditional 2-D video, can provide the viewer a more vivid feeling and as a result it has a wide application in 3-D movies, computer games, navigations, remote surgeries and so on.We introduce a novel stereo video display system based on DSP and programmable hardware FPGA in this thesis. This system also provides a powerful platform for the coding and transmission of stereo video over the Internet. Simulating the way human view the scene with two eyes, we use two cameras to capture two PAL or NTSC video sequences. Then the two sequences are displayed on the same monitor after horizontal scan frequency and vertical scan frequency doubling, and we can see a 100Hz (PAL) or 120Hz (NTSC) stereo video with a pair of liquid crystal shutter glasses synchronized by the infrared synchronization signal.Digital signal processor's (DSP) powerful computing capability and many external interfaces make it widely used in the capturing, processing, encoding and transmission of video signal. We applied the TI's TMS320DM642 DSP as the core of our system which is used for the capturing, processing and displaying of two video sequences; at he same time we chose other chips based on the system specification to form the system frame. We designed the software and hardware platform of the system after we build the system frame. Firstly, we finished the circuits design and PCB board with Protel software and then implemented circuit board according to PCB board. Secondly, under the TI's DSP software development environment CCS, we implemented the main programs of DSP for video processing and configuration of SAA7115 via I~2C. Then, with the application of FPGA and Video memories, we designed the circuits to merge the two video sequences into one and enhance the scan frequency of output video using hardware description language (HDL). The video signal can be transformed to VGA signal by an A-D converter and transmitted to the displayer with a synchronized signal for the liquid crystal shutter glasses.This thesis introduces a method of designing a stereo video system. We mainly designed the hardware and software platform of the system and implemented the method of capturing and displaying of stereo video. The system can be used for the encoding and transmission of stereo video as well. It has promising prospective applications in stereo microscopic, remote surgeries and so on.
