In the current, the Internet is changing into the next generation network which supports all of Telecommunication network, Radio and TV Network and the custom Internet. Under the background above, the kind of network services, especially the kind of video services, increases rapidly. The existing network now is under great pressure. As the link bandwidth problem solved by the optical fiber technology, the flexibility and performance of the router become the key point to guarantee the quality of network service. It becomes a serious problem that how to improve the flexibility and the performance of the router at the same time.By analyzing the defects of mainstream routers, such as fixed structure and poor flexibility, New Generation of High Availability Network Project (National High Technology Research and Development Program of China, 863 Program) proposes that the Open-Reconfigurable Router should be an effective way to solve these problems of custom routers. Based on the study of component technology, reconfigurable computing technology and the new router architecture, a novel model of hardware component, the support environment and reconfiguration mechanism of hardware component are studied and proposed in this paper, and part of the design and implementation of some components is also proposed.The main work of this paper is as follows:1. Based on the researches of software component and the performance-sensitive characteristic of hardware component, a model of hardware component face to Open-Reconfigurable Router is proposed. The model gives a formal description of hardware component, including function, resource consumption and performance (the most important). The model proposed in this paper forms the foundation to produce a real hardware component.2. For the problem how to support the reconstruction of the router by using hardware component, support environment and reconfiguration mechanism of hardware component are studied. Through comparative analysis, SRAM-based FPGA is selected as the implementation platform of hardware component; the function and structure of the component library is proposed; the searching mechanism, loading mechanism and the reconfiguration mechanism of hardware component are proposed.3. According to the hardware component model proposed in this paper, the design and implementation of a reconfigurable multiple-stage switching fabric is finished. This switching fabric is formed by Reconfigurable Logic Unit (RLU) and Central Switch Unit (CSU). Numbers of RLUs and CSUs form the reconfigurable switching fabric which supports upgrading. The congestion control component, the service recognition component and the flow control component are designed and implemented. All of the three components locate in the pretreatment FPGA to support the packet forwarding.
