Developing a Farmland Information Management Platform (FIMP) based on geographic information systems (GIS) and Internet technology can improve precision agriculture management. In this study, we designed a Browser/Server distributed platform system based on GIS through a series of open-source software packages (OSS) such as Linux, PHP, Mapserver, and expert decision systems supported by many mathematical models. Moreover, we realized dynamic collection, data sharing, and the analysis of farmland information. The platform consists of the farmland electronic archives, a soil information management system, a crop video monitoring system, and an intelligent decision system. It also provides Internet information services and a complementary mobile phone short messaging service.The platform system can be divided into three parts:the Field Monitoring Network, the Information Platform, and the User Client.The Field Monitoring Network based on GSM, ZigBee and Intelligent Sensor technology, realized field variables real-time monitoring such as field moisture and Crop condition, and remote irrigation control. The Field Monitoring Network can be divided into three parts:the Farmland Communication Subnet, the GPRS Networks and the Measuring and Controlling terminal.Integrated Information Platform is Central of FIMP, which is responsible for receiving real-time monitoring network of the field parameter data and storage, and also provides users with a variety of information services. The web platform establishs basing on internet, which is connecting all relevant sectors of agricultural production, real-time transmission and sharing of data, using GIS technology powerful spatial analysis capabilities, integrated management of soil, weather, crop type, yield and other aspects of information, applicating intelligent policy-making functions, and providing decision to support services. Platform is designed as a multi-user system.Designed according to the needs of different user types to customize the user interface and allocate the user rights and capabilities, such as the division of information managers, information managers of soil fertilizer and so on. Platform includes a variety of modules-the user management module, strip module field of electronic records, soil moisture monitoring module, video monitoring module, equipments management module, irrigation control modules, whose additions and deletions can be carried out according to actual situation.System uses the B/S model design and development. As long as Internet access, users can access the site through the browser platform to gain a variety of agricultural information services. Supporting mobile phone wap platform, and messaging service platform, users can access information anytime, anywhere a variety services of platform.
