These years, people's demands for sounds, data and video services are increasing rapidly with climbing needs of internet transmission speed. Therefore, current connect technology, "the last one mile", including XDSL cannot satisfy customer demand of transmission any more, especially with the advent of the policy of the combination of network of Telecom, CATV and computer. EPON technology (Ethernet-based Passive Optical Network) has advantages in Broad Band-width, short transmission distance, low cost of copper cable and low cost for operation and maintaining. It distinguished itself from the great many network technologies becoming a significant approach of present construction of network connect.The paper starts with a combination of theory and practice. It studies EPON's construction and application in local network, with the example of Xiamen Telecommunications Company (XTC). Major researches concludes the analysis of the condition and problems of XTC's access network as well as its requirement in the development of network and services; from the aspects of network establishment and operation, the paper discusses suitable construction pattern with the investigation of its operation. Problems in the EPON application are also analyzed, with the research of promoting the stability of EPON network. There are some achievements acquired in the investigation and research of XTC, which are presented in following aspects. There are plan of access network of XTC, network resource distribution and management system suitable for construction mode, contributing to more efficient network construction; IT system support in FTTH service process and the direct drive from services in the end construction of network are realized, which is different with traditional establish- use network operation mode and promotes network efficiency; from the practice of maintenance, EPON network vocal application stability raise methods is pointed out; the paper also proposes solutions for the problem of mixed ports in PON under different modes. XTC uses the newly established EPON network and reformed more the 10% XDSL broad band customers.The first chapter introduces the demand of the reform and update of the connect network of XTC. With the background and characters of EPON technology, it proposes the object—realizing the update of network connection with the utilization of EPON. The second Chapter describes the standard process of EPON technology. It explains the system structure of EPON, analyzes its principles and provides comparisons of several PON techniques. The next chapter studies current condition of local wired access networks in Xiamen, giving specific plan for network resources and facilities. The fourth chapter discusses the mode of constructing EPON network and the related operational methods of FTTB and FTTH in XTC. It mainly introduces measures under two different network establishment and management of resources distribution. The chapter also points out major problems and solutions for the application of EPON network in XTC. The fifth chapter gives a conclusion of the research work of the paper, which also offers the consideration of how to raise the network operation ability in the next stage.
