Scientific visualization, computer animation and virtual reality are the three focuses of modern computer graphics, and realistic graphics is the core of the three focuses. Illumination model is an important part of the realistic graphics technology, which is one of the performance indicators which measure the effect of computer graphics. Therefore, continuing to study and improve the illumination model has very important significance and broad application prospects. This paper studies the Phong model and Cook-Torrance model in local illumination model, and the Whitted model in global illumination model. Based on above, the paper makes an analysis of distortion of highlight calculating by the Phong model in the Whitted model, and improves the calculation of specular reflection light using the Cook-Torrance model. Then an algorithm implementation of ray tracing based on improved model is given. The experimental results show that the improved model for highlight simulation achieves better results. Finally, a realistic graphics display system is designed, which realizes two work modes, including real-time rendering and enhanced sense of reality. Cook-Torrance model, which has a fast speed, is used in the real-time rendering mode. And the mode can meet the needs of real-time interaction. Ray-racing is used in the enhanced sense of reality mode, which can realize the processing of enhance the results operated by user. The system will have a broader range of applications based on the combination of the two modes.
