As one kind of graphics generation technology, realistic graphics is always in the front of computer graphics domain. The application of illumination model and rendering technology in complex scenes and the universality of the illumination model and rendering technology in the different scenes are studied in this thesis. Making its application convenient in engineering and simplifying engineering design in graphic engineering domain such as visual simulation are the targets of this thesis.As the illumination models could not be used in all-purpose areas and realize universality, the underwater scene is taken as an example, and the drawing feature of underwater scene is analyzed, the reasons why light's attenuation is high underwater is illustrated by photometry theory, and then an underwater scene illumination model is presented which is basing on the whitted global illumination model. The underwater visibility is referred as a factor which affects the lights intensity in this mode, which makes the underwater scene realistic graphics much better. Based on research deeply on the feature of different scenes and the feature of lights transmitting, the underwater scene illumination model is expanded to be used in complex scenes. Then the media of different scenes is abstracted in which lights are transmitted and the complex scenes model is simplified to a model which includes many layers of semitransparent media, and a complex scenes illumination model based on the underwater scene illumination model is proposed in this thesis. At last, the realistic rendering pictures based on the underwater scene illumination model are realized by using ray-tracing algorithm and the 3-D graphics generation software POV-RAY. The realistic rendering pictures are analyzed and the advantages of the underwater scene illumination model are certified by this experiment which includes improving the realistic rendering effects in the underwater scenes, simplifying the usage of illumination model, and realizing the universality of illumination model.
